World War I was fought between 1914 and 1918 between Germany and Austria-Hungary on the one hand and most of the rest of the world on the other.

Hockey in Canada was scaled back in those years because of the shortage of men, many of whom had gone to war. International hockey, which had just started out around 1910, was on hold during the war.
