In a burst of patriotic fever, the senior teams in Manitoba were named after World War I battles in 1917-18.
The Winnipeg Ypres won the Winnipeg League and the Manitoba championship. They then defeated the Saskatoon Quakers for the right to challenge for the Allan Cup. The team was actually the Monarchs.
They lost the 1917-18 Allan Cup challenge to the Kitchener Greenshirts.
Notable players for the team include: Helge Bostrom, Haldor Halderson, Dick Irvin, and Hal Winkler all of which played in the National Hockey League.
