A winger is a forward whose primary zone of play is the outer playing area. Two wingers flank one centre, and they play various styles: out-and-out goal scorers, checkers, and forwards who work along the boards and in the corners.

Most wingers have a preferred side, and are accordingly called Left Wingers (LW) is they prefer to play to the left of the centre or Right Wingers (RW) is they rather like to play on the right of the centre.
