The Wilkes University Colonels is men's hockey team representing Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Both the men's and women's programs took to the ice with the 2017-18 season. The team plays and practice out of the Toyota SportsPlex. The facility is the practice facility of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League, with whom they will have an affiliation with to get the program off the ground.

The school was announced as being an inaugural member of the United Collegiate Hockey Conference for the 2017-18 season when the conference was formally announced on October 4, 2016. The school is also a member of the Middle Atlantic Conferences hockey conference. The MAC is the school's all-sports home. The MAC is contested in the same manner as the Ivy League is run within the ECAC Hockey hockey conference.

The men's program was later announced as being pushed back to start for the 2018-19 season when Michael Young reconsidered accepting the position and decided to remain at Westfield State. The school felt it would be best for the new head coach to have a full recruiting cycle to get a team together.

On May 30, 2017 Brett Riley was announced at the head coach of the men's team

The women's program announced on August 3, 2017 that they would delay the start of their team until 2018-19 as well due to lower than anticipated roster size. The team would play as an independent for the 2018-19 season.
