Trent Kenneth McCleary (born September 8, 1972) is a Canadian former professional hockey player who played for the Boston Bruins, Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens in the National Hockey League.

Throat injury[]

McCleary's career was cut short after a freak incident during a home game in Montreal on January 29, 2000. While attempting to block a shot by Philadelphia Flyers player Chris Therien, he was accidentally struck in the throat by the flying puck. An emergency tracheotomy had to be performed at the Molson Centre, a procedure that saved his life. Several surgeries were required before he could regain his speech. He now has a 15% narrower air passage due to a partially-paralyzed left vocal cord and scar tissue on the cricoid cartilage in his throat.
