The Cape Breton Senior Hockey League, like other leagues in Canada, suffered from a shortage of players in World War II. In 1942-43 this was very serious. Fortunately there were a large number of military personnel assigned to the area as part of the Battle of the Atlantic which was literally being fought around the island.
Three teams of military people from the three branches were set up and they replaced the civilian teams of past years. The navy team was assigned to Sydney, Nova Scotia.
This was the only year that this format was used.
