Sven Bärtschi[1] (born October 5, 1992) is a Swiss ice hockey player who plays for the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League (WHL). He played his first professional games in 2009 for SC Langenthal in the National League B before moving to North America to join Portland in the 2010–11 WHL season where he finished as the runner-up for the league's Rookie of the Year award. He is a prospect of the Calgary Flames, selected 13th overall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

Playing career

Bärtschi was the seventh pick overall in the June 2010 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft.[2]Before he departed to North America in mid-2010, he played one winter for SC Langenthal in the Swiss National League B,[3] and the Swiss top-tier SC Bern tried to recruit him.[4] He also played on the Swiss under-18 national team in 2009 and 2010.[5] His father once played Swiss professional hockey.[3]

Bärtschi was born and raised in Langenthal, Switzerland.[6]

On July 5, 2011, Calgary Flames signed Bärtschi to his entry-level deal. 3 years @ $925,000 per season, average annual value of $1,450,000. [7]
