Staffan Kronwall (born September 10, 1982) is a professional ice-hockey defenceman for Severstal Cherepovets of the Kontinental Hockey League. He previously played for the Calgary Flames and has also played with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League (NHL).
Playing career[]
Kronwall represented Sweden at the 2002 World Junior Championship and collected 0 points and 4 penalty minutes in 7 games for Sweden.
He was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 9th round, 285th overall of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft and spent much of the first four seasons of his North American career with the Leafs' AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies.[1] He was placed on waivers midway through the 2008–09 season where he was claimed by the Washington Capitals.[2] He signed with the Calgary Flames via free agency in 2009.[1]
Kronwall scored his first NHL goal on October 6, 2009, in a 4-3 win against Jaroslav Halak of the Montreal Canadiens,[3] but spent the majority of the season with the AHL's Abbotsford Heat. He remained with the Heat to begin the 2010–11 season, but sought to return to Sweden to be closer to his family.[4] With the blessing of the Flames, Kronwall signed a one year contract with his former team Djurgårdens IF on October 11, 2010.[5]
Personal life[]
He is the younger brother of Niklas Kronwall, a Detroit Red Wings defenceman.[1]
