The city of Springfield is located in western Massachusetts, United States.
It has a population of about 155,000 and a metropolitan area of about 682,000.
The city is home to the offices of the American Hockey League

- Hartford Whalers (NHL, 1979-1980) return to Hartford, on January 17, 1980, when repairs to Hartford Civic Center roof are completed
- New England Whalers
- (WHA, 1978-1979) team joins NHL as Hartford Whalers
- Springfield Falcons (AHL, 1994-2016) relocated to Tucson, Arizona when franchise is purchased by Arizona Coyotes of the NHL
