The Shreveport Mudbugs were formally announced as an expansion team in the North American 3 Hockey League on April 8, 2016. The team is based out of the Hirsch Coliseum on the State Fairgrounds in Shreveport, Louisiana. The announcement indicated that the owners signed a 12 year lease with two additional five year options. The coliseum which originally opened in 1954 had recently underwent a $1.5 million renovation to bring the capacity down to about 4,000.
The team won the South Division regular season title in 2018 and survived two game five's against the Corpus Christi IceRays and Lone Star Brahmas to reach the Robertson Cup where they swept the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights and defeated the Minot Minotauros 2-1 in the championship game to claim their first Robertson Cup
