Byram turned pro in 1988-89 with the Springfield Indians. In 1990-91 he got into four games (scoreless) with the Islanders.
In 1994, after a long stretch in the minor pros, Byram decided to go to Great Britain, where he spent most of the rest of his career. His best season was 1995-96 when he scored 70 goals and 120 assists in just 42 games for the Manchester Storm. Byram also spent some time in Italy and Austria.
Byram played for five seasons for the Ayr Scottish Eagles.
