"Amaruks" was the name of the sports teams from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan's college, known as Central Saskatchewan Technical Institute (from 1963 to 1988), the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology (SIAST) Kelsey Campus (from 1988 to 2014), and Saskatchewan Polytechnic Saskatoon Campus (2014-2018). The hockey team played in the Prairie Athletic Conference (PAC or PAC Sask) from 1969-70 to 1989-90. PAC Sask was affiliated with the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA), the second tier of university/college sport in Canada, until 1994. The CCAA has not held a national hockey playoff since 2001. However, the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) continues to operate, and the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) operates a league of mostly Cégep teams.

The four schools that make up Saskatchewan Polytechnic started off as four individual schools:
- Moose Jaw began as the Saskatchewan Technical Institute in 1959.
- Saskatoon began as the Central Saskatchewan Technical Institute in 1963.
- Regina began as the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences in 1972.
- Prince Albert began as the Northern Institute of Technology in 1986.
In January 1988, Saskatchewan's technical institutes, urban community colleges and the Advanced Technology Training Centre were amalgamated to form the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology (SIAST). The four campuses were re-named as follows:
- Moose Jaw: SIAST Palliser Campus
- Saskatoon: SIAST Kelsey Campus
- Regina: SIAST Wascana Campus
- Prince Albert: SIAST Woodland Campus
On September 24, 2014 the institution was re-named Saskatchewan Polytechnic.
Until 2018, all four campuses had athletic teams that competed in the PAC Sask. The teams were also members of the CCAA until 1994.
