Ryerson ram 2011b

"Rams" is the name of the sports teams of Ryerson University, located in Toronto, Ontario. They are members of Ontario University Athletics (OUA) and U Sports (formerly known as CIS).

History

The university started as the "Ryerson Institute of Technology" in 1948 and changed its name to "Ryerson Polytechnical Institute" in 1966 and then "Ryerson Polytechnic University" in 1993. The current name was adopted in 2001.

The Ryerson Rams hockey team started in 1949-50. There are no Wikia links to any of their seasons until the 1964-65 season of the Ontario Intercollegiate Athletic Association (OIAA). The Ryerson Alumni Site and a team Hall of Fame story claim that the team won championships in the Minor College Hockey League (MCHL or MCL) in 1951-52 and the intermediate Central Ontario Hockey League (COHA or COHL) four times between 1953 and 1957. It also claims that they won OIAA titles in 1959 and 1963. However, there are no Wikia links for any OIAA competition before 1964-65, there are no links for the MCHL, and the COHL link has no information pre-1970.

In any event, Ryerson remained in the OIAA until the conference ended in 1970-71. In 1971-72 they joined the Ontario Universities Athletic Association (OUAA) once the Ontario and Quebec conferences were re-organized along provincial lines.
