History

This league was formed, in Quebec, in the 1937-38 season as a competitor to the Quebec Senior Hockey League. The Quebec Senior Hockey League had teams only in Montreal, Ottawa, and Quebec. The Provincial League expanded senior hockey to smaller towns in the province. It was made up of former intermediate teams.

The league's play was interrupted by World War II but restarted in 1944-45. After the 1947-48 season it merged into the Quebec Senior Hockey League.

The league was revived in 1951-52 after the Quebec Senior Hockey League changed its level to the higher Major category. It lasted for only three seasons before folding due to poor attendance.

The league was revived again in 1964-65 when the Eastern Townships League changed its name. This version lasted five seasons.
