The Port Colborne Sailors are a junior B team from Port Colborne, Ontario that became a Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League during the 2023 off seeason when the Thorold Blackhawks relocated to the community. The team is based out of the Vale Health and Wellness Centre.
Root of the Move[]
The Thorold Blackhawks were forced to move their home games to the Vale Health and Wellness Centre in Port Colborne for the 2022 playoffs and for the 2022-23 season due to ongoing construction at the Thorold Community Arena. On May 16, 2023 the move was made permanent with the team being renamed the Port Colborne Sailors.[1]
Previous Name History[]
The Port Colborne Sailors were an amateur team in Port Colborne, Ontario. They were, at various times, Senior A, Senior B, Intermediate A, Junior A, and Junior B teams.
The Intermediate A team won the 1948-49 Eastern Canada Intermediate Playoffs. They also won the Ontario Hockey Association title in 1949, 1950, 1961, 1962, 1969, 1970,1975, and 1976.
The Junior A team played only one season - 1936-37 OHA Junior A Season.
The Sailors played only one season of Senior B. In 1936-37, the team could not get into the Senior A league which was centerd in Toronto. The Sailors were placed as the only team in Senior B and beat the Intermediate A champion before losing to the Senior A winner.
