Pitt Panthers wordmark

The Pitt Panthers is the name of the athletic teams representing the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The university formerly had collegiate level teams on and off from 1896 to 1939. During that time frame teams played in the Western Pennsylvania Hockey League from 1896 to 1900 when the university was known as Western University of Pennsylvania and the Penn-Ohio Intercollegiate Hockey League from 1937 to 1939 when the university discontinued the ice hockey program.

The original team from 1896 was based out of the Schenley Park Casino until that arena burned down December 17, 1896 and all of the team's gear was also lost in the fire. The program was revived along with the Western Pennsylvania Hockey League when the Duquesne Gardens was converted from a trolley barn to an ice hockey rink for the 1898-99 season. The WPHL would go professional in 1901 and the team would withdraw.

The university itself was known as Western University of Pennsylvania until 1908.
