Holm's youth team is the Huddinge IK. In 2006-07 season played Holm junior hockey with the Djurgårdens IF organisation. In the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons played Holm with the Nacka HK organisation. In the 2008-09 season, he made his senior debut when he played 1 game with the Nacka HK of the Division 1. In this season, he also played 12 games with the Nacka HK under-18 team and 28 regular season games and 6 qualification games with the Nacka HK under-20 team. In the 2009-10 season played Holm 19 regular season games and 2 qualification games with the Nacka HK under-20 team and 33 games with the Nacka HK of the Division 1.
Holm began the 2010-11 season with the Djurgårdens IF junior team, then, after 41 regular season games and 5 play-off games played, he signed a two-year contract with the Djurgårdens IF of the Elitserien in February 2011.[1] He was named as an extra player in the league game against Skellefteå AIK on March 3, 2011, but did not get any time on the ice.[2][3]
He played seven games, scoring one goal, with Djurgårdens IF in the 2011 edition of the pre-season tournament European Trophy.[3]
Holm received his first time on the ice in an Elitserien game in the league premier against HV71 on September 15, 2011.[4] Holm scored his first Elitserien goal in the away game against Skellefteå AIK on October 4, 2011.[5] All in all, he played 4 games with the Djurgårdens IF junior team and 50 regular season games and 10 Kvalserien SHL games with the Djurgårdens IF of the Elitserien in the 2011-12 season. In the end of the season, Djurgårdens IF was demoted to the HockeyAllsvenskan.
In 2012-2014, Holm continued with the Djurgårdens IF in the HockeyAllsvenskan. In 2014, Djurgårdens IF advanced into the SHL (formerly Elitserien) and Holm stayed there until the end of the 2015-16 season.
After six seasons within the Djurgården organization, Holm left as a free agent in signing a two-year contract with fellow SHL competitors, the Växjö Lakers HC on April 20, 2016.[6]
Holm played one season with the Lakers in which he became the best SHL player in terms of plus/minus (+24) before he implemented his NHL out clause in agreeing to a one-year, entry-level contract with the Vancouver Canucks organisation on May 26, 2017.[7]
To begin the 2017-18 season, Holm was assigned to the Canucks' AHL affiliate, the Utica Comets. He played there 42 games. On February 13, 2018, Holm was recalled by the Canucks and made his NHL debut, appearing in a solitary game before returning to the Comets. On February 26, 2018, the Canucks dealt Holm at the NHL trade deadline to the Vegas Golden Knights organisation in exchange for Brendan Leipsic.[8] He was immediately assigned by the Golden Knight to affiliate, the Chicago Wolves of the AHL for the remainder of the season. He finished there the season with 21 regular season games and 3 play-off games played.
On July 17, 2018, Holm opted to leave North America in agreeing to a one-year contract with Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod of the KHL.[9] During his lone season with the club, Holm recorded seven goals and 26 points in 61 games. He also skated in the 2019 KHL All-Star Game and was named the KHL Defenceman of the Week on November 26, 2018.[10]
On August 13, 2019, Holm made his return to North America, signing a one-year, two-way contract with the Chicago Blackhawks organisation.[11] Unable to secure a roster position with the Chicago Blackhawks of the NHL at training camp, Holm began the 2019-20 season in the AHL with affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs. Holm made 30 appearances with the Rockford IceHogs, registering 4 goals and 15 points, before opting to mutually terminate his contract with the Chicago Blackhawks organisation in order to continue his career in Europe.
On January 7, 2020, Holm joined Lausanne HC of the NL on a one-year deal through the remainder of the 2019-20 season. He was brought in as a replacement for struggling fellow countryman, Jonas Junland.[12] He played there 9 games.
After the 2019-20 season, Holm signed a one-year contract with the Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the KHL.
In 2021, Holm signed a two-year contract with the Jokerit of the KHL.
