The Penn State Nittany Lions are a Men's Division I team and a Women's Division I team, both started in the 2012–13 season. The men's team is a member of the Big Ten which began sponsoring hockey in 2013–14. The women have joined College Hockey America.

Josh Brandwene was the team's head coach from its start in 2012-13 until the end of the 2016-17 season. Jeff Kampersal was named as his replacement for the 2017-18 season.
