The Newfoundland Senior Hockey League (NLSHL) was a Canadian senior ice hockey league in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The league competed for the Herder Memorial Trophy and its teams could declare themselves eligible for the Allan Cup.

HistoryEdit

The league was confirmed September 10, 2011 at the Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador AGM. The league is the result of a merger between the Avalon East Senior Hockey League and the West Coast Senior Hockey League. The league includes the province's two only Allan Cup champions, the Corner Brook Royals (1986 Allan Cup) and Clarenville Caribous (2011 Allan Cup).

The league was a Newfoundland-wide league, much like the old Newfoundland Senior Hockey League which folded in the 1980s.

After the season ended Corner Brook returned to the league as the Corner Brook Royals returned to town after playing two seasons in Deer Lake 50km (30 miles) away as the Western Royals. However, the league fell apart on June 1, 2014 when the Clarenville Caribous, Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts, Gander Flyers along with the Corner Brook Royals all withdrew from the league in order to form the Central/West Senior Hockey League. Many of the league's teams had been plagued by financial issues caused by travel expenses associated with a province-wide league. All of these teams were in the central and western parts of the province and the remaining teams were in the immediate St. John's area. This left the Conception Bay North CeeBee Stars and the Mount Pearl Blades were left without a league. Both organizations applied for entry in the Avalon East Senior Hockey League and were rejected by the league on August 26, 2014. Both teams had previously been members of the league and according to an article in the Compass online newspaper had stated that the teams departures from the league was not on the best of terms.
