Newfoundland Growlers are a professional ice hockey team in the ECHL set to begin play for the 2018–19 season. Based in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, the team will play their home games at the Mile One Centre.
The team replaces the
American Hockey League's St. John's IceCaps after the franchise became the Laval Rocket in 2016. The team was first announced when the ECHL signed off on the expansion membership application on March 13, 2018.
The name in an homage to an iconic Newfoundland photo of Private Hazen Frazier with Sable Chief, a Newfoundland dog that served as the mascot of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment during the First World War.
Ryane Clowe was named the first head coach of the team.
