The Newfoundland Growlers are a professional minor league ice hockey team in the ECHL based in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. The team began play in the 2018–19 ECHL season with home games at Mary Brown's Centre. They are members in the North Division of the Eastern Conference and are affiliated with the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League and Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League.
The team replaced the American Hockey League's St. John's IceCaps after the franchise became the Laval Rocket in 2016. The team was first announced when the ECHL signed off on the expansion membership application on March 13, 2018.[1]
The name in an homage to an iconic Newfoundland photo of Private Hazen Frazier with Sable Chief, a Newfoundland dog that served as the mascot of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment during the First World War.[2]
Newfoundland native Ryane Clowe was named the first head coach of the team.[3]
