The Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks men's ice hockey team is a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I college ice hockey program that represents University of Nebraska-Omaha. The Mavericks are a member of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA). They play at the Qwest Center Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska.[1] The Mavericks previously competed in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) before joining the WCHA for the 2010-11 season.[2]
History
Edit
The University of Nebraska-Omaha added varsity men's ice hockey for the 1997-98 season. The team joined the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) and participated in the conference for 13 seasons before transferring to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) for the 2010-11 season.[3] During the program's tenure in the CCHA the Mavericks reached the NCAA post season tournament once in 2006. UNO lost their first and only NCAA Tournament game 2-9 to Boston University.[4]
Coaches
Edit
The Mavericks are currently coached by Dean Blais.[5] Blais was hired in June 2009,[6] he replaces UNO Hockey's first coach Mike Kemp behind the Nebraska–Omaha bench. He is the former head coach at University of North Dakota from 1994-2004,[7] assistant coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets from 2004-2007[8], and also previously served as head coach and GM of the Fargo Force (USHL) from 2007–2009.[9][10] During his first season at UNO, Blais also served as head coach of the gold medal winning Team USA U20.[11][12]
