Moritz Seider (German pronunciation: [ˈmoːʁɪts ˈsaɪdɐ]; born 6 April 2001) is a Germany professional ice hockey defenceman currently playing with Rögle BK in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) on loan as a prospect with the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League (NHL).[1] He was selected by the Red Wings, 6th overall, in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.
Playing career[]
A top prospect for the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, he was tabbed as "the best German defence prospect since Christian Ehrhoff" by The Hockey Writers.[2] On June 21, 2019, he was selected in the first round, sixth overall, by the Detroit Red Wings.[3] On July 14, 2019, he was signed to a three-year, entry-level contract with the Detroit Red Wings.[4]
On 4 August 2020, Seider was returned by the Red Wings on loan to original club, Adler Mannheim of the DEL, to begin the 2020–21 season due to the delayed North American season as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic.[5] On 8 October 2020, with no start date for the DEL in sight, the Red Wings terminated his loan with Mannheim.[6] It was announced on the same day that he would instead be loaned to Rögle BK in the Swedish Hockey League for the remainder of the season,[7] joining former Adler Mannheim teammate Ben Smith.[8]
International play[]
At the 2019 World Junior Championship Division IA tournament, he led all defensemen in scoring.
