Miika Koivisto (born on July 20, 1990 in Vaasa) is a Finnish professional ice hockey defenceman who is currently playing with the Växjö Lakers HC of the SHL.
Club career[]
Koivisto played junior hockey with the Sport organisation and made his senior debut in the 2010-11 season playing 5 regular season games and 2 play-off games with the Sport of the Mestis winning the Mestis title. He continued with the Sport in the 2012-13 season and they became the Mestis champions once again.
After that played Koivisto with the KalPa of the SM-liiga during the 2012-13 season.[1] He continued with the KalPa of the Liiga (formerly SM-liiga) until the end of the 2014-15 season.
In the 2015-16 season played Koivisto 24 games with the Lukko of the Liiga and 1 game on loan with the KeuPa HT of the Mestis.
During the next season played Koivisto with the Jukurit of the Liiga. He was named into the Liiga All-Star Team, had the league's highest average time on ice (27:13), scored most assists by defenceman (33) and gained the Pekka Rautakallio Award for the Liiga's best defenceman.
In the 2017-18 season played Koivisto with the Kärpät of the Liiga. Kärpät won the Liiga title this season and Koivisto had most assists by defenceman (29) and most points by defenceman (39) in the whole Liiga.
After six seasons in the Liiga, Koivisto attracted interest abroad and agreed to a one-year contract as a free agent with Russian outfit, the Dynamo Moskva of the KHL, on May 4, 2018.[2] During his season with the Dynamo he was selected to the 2019 KHL All-Star Game but did not play there.
After the season moved Koivisto to the Swiss NL, agreeing to a one-year contract with the SC Bern on June 11, 2019.[3] On November 3, 2019, SC Bern released Koivisto who put up only 2 assists and struggled defensively in 15 games with the team. He was signed the following day to commence a two-year deal with Swedish outfit, the Växjö Lakers HC of the SHL.[4]
International career[]
