he Midwest High School Hockey League (abbreviated MHSHL) is a club high school level ice hockey league in North America consisting of teams from Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas. Originally, founded in 1976 as the Iowa High School Hockey Leage and officially incorporated in 1980. Prior to 1976 the Des Moines Metro High School League consisted of 6 teams and these were joined by several other teams across the state to start the new league. The 1989-90 season would see the league begin it's affiliation with USA Hockey and add teams from Omaha, Nebraska. With the continued addition of teams outside of the state of Iowa the league officially changed to the Midwest High School Hockey league for the 2006-07 season.
The league hosts an annual state tournament to crown varsity and junior varsity champions. The tournament used to rotate host cities until 2009 when it was centralized to be hosted in Ames, IA each year. After 13 years as state tournament host championship weekend was moved in 2022 to the new MidAmerican Energy RecPlex in West Des Moines, IA. The league also regularly sends representing teams to the America's showcase pre-season tournament and the USA Hockey High School division 2 national championships. In 2018 the Sioux City Metro's captured the leagues first national championship, followed in 2021 by the Omaha Jr. Lancers earning the leagues second title. The 2021 tourament was a strong showing for the league as both Omaha and the Dubuque Saints made strong showings before meeting each other in the semi-finals.
Many of the teams in the league share affilations with their hometown USHL teams. It's common that team names and uniforms reflect their USHL partners.
