Michal Jordán (born on July 17, 1990 in Zlín) is a Czech professional ice hockey defenceman currently playing with the Amur Khabarovsk of the KHL. He was selected by the Carolina Hurricanes in the fourth round, 105th overall, of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

Club career[]

Jordán began playing junior hockey with the HC Zlín organisation. In 2007, he moved to North America in order to play with the Windsor Spitfires of the OHL. However, after just 22 games played with the Spitfires, Jordán moved to the Plymouth Whalers of the OHL where he finished the season with 39 regular season games and 4 play-off games played. He continued with the Whalers for the next two seasons.

Jordán made his senior debut in the 2010-11 season with the Carolina Hurricanes' AHL affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers.[1] He spent two whole seasons with the Checkers.

In the 2012-13 season, Jordán played 54 regular season games and 1 play-off game with the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL and also 5 games with the Carolina Hurricanes of the NHL. In this season, Jordán also played at the 2013 AHL All-Star Game.

Then he spent again the whole 2013-14 season with the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL.

On October 9, 2014, just prior to the commencement of the 2014-15 season, his fifth with the Checkers, Jordán was named the Checkers' captain. He played 30 games with the Charlotte Checkers during this season while he also played 38 games with the Carolina Hurricanes of the NHL.

In the 2015-16 season, Jordán played 36 games with the Carolina Hurricanes of the NHL and 4 games with the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL.

After six years within the Hurricanes organization, Jordán left as a free agent following the 2015-16 season. On October 7, 2016, he belatedly signed a one-year deal for the duration of the 2016-17 season with the Ak Bars Kazan of the KHL.[2] He was limited to 27 regular season games with the Ak Bars Kazan, contributing with 7 points. He added another 2 points in 9 play-off games.

As a free agent, Jordán opted to continue in the KHL, securing a two-year contract with the Amur Khabarovsk on May 26, 2017.[3] During the 2018-19 season, Jordán was named the KHL Defenceman of the Week on February 25, 2019.

During the 2019-20 season, in which he continued with the Amur Khabarovsk, in November 2019, amidst the controversy of Bill Peters racially-charged comments toward a former player of color, Jordán came to the forefront of NHL media as he described playing for Peters as an "...experience with the worst coach ever by far." He went on to describe how Peters would kick and punch him and others players in the head during a game.[4]

In the 2019-20 season, he was again named the KHL Defenceman of the Week on February 28, 2020.

Jordán continued with the Amur Khabarovsk of the KHL during the 2020-21 season. He is signed there until the end of this season.

International career[]

Jordán played with the Czech National Team at the 2007 World U18 Championship, 2008 World U18 Championship Division I (winning there a gold medal and being named the best defenceman while having most assists by defenceman (5) on the tournament), 2008, 2009 and 2010 World Junior Championships (as the captain at the 2010 tournament), 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018 World Championships, 2016 World Cup of Hockey and at the 2018 Olympics.
