Pavelich played for the Detroit Red Wings junior farm team Galt Red Wings of the Ontario Hockey Association from 1944-47. Exceprt for two part seasons with the Indianapolis Capitals, Pavelich was a regular with Detroit for 10 seasons until 1956-57.

Pavelich played 634 career NHL games, scoring 93 goals and 159 assists for 252 points. He won the Stanley Cup four times in his career (1950, 1952, 1954, 1955), and as a result also played in four all-star games.
