Marcus Ragnarsson (born August 13, 1971) is a retired Swedish professional ice hockey defenseman. He played nine seasons in the NHL for the San Jose Sharks and Philadelphia Flyers. He is currently the assistant coach of the Swedish National Team.

Playing career[edit | edit source]

Ragnarsson began his career in 1986 playing for Östervåla IF of the Division 2. He stayed there until the end of the 1988-89 season. From 1989 to 1995, Ragnarsson played with Djurgårdens IF of the Elitserien. In his first season with Djurgårdens IF, he played also a few games for Nacka HK of the Division 1.

Ragnarsson was drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the fifth round, 99th overall, in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft. He enjoyed tremendous success paired alongside Mike Rathje in San Jose. During a disastrous 2002–03 season for San Jose, Ragnarsson was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers for Dan McGillis. During the NHL lockout, Ragnarsson retired from the NHL and returned to play in his native Sweden.

In 2004 - 2008, Ragnarsson played for Almtuna IS of the HockeyAllsvenskan. Since 2008 he was playing again for Djurgårdens IF and retired during the 2010-11 season.

Ragnarsson played for Swedish National Team at the 1995 and 1997 World Championships, 1998 and 2002 Olympics and at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey.
