Magnus Nygren (born on June 7, 1990 in Karlstad) is a Swedish ice hockey defenceman currently playing with the HC Davos of the NL. Nygren was the 113th overall pick by the Montréal Canadiens in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
Club career[]
Nygren began his junior career with the Färjestad BK organisation. In the 2008-09 season played Nygren 2 games with the Skåre BK under-20 team and also made his senior debut as he played 41 games with the Skåre BK of the Division 1.
In the 2009-10 season played Nygren 9 games with the Färjestad BK of the Elitserien, 21 regular season games and 2 qualification games on loan with the Mora IK of the HockeyAllsvenskan and 24 games on loan with the Skåre BK of the Division 1. In this season, he became the defenceman with most assists (18), most goals (9) and most points (27) recorded in the Division 1 (E).
In the 2010-11 season played Nygren 22 regular season games and 14 play-off games with the Färjestad BK of the Elitserien and 35 games on loan with the Bofors IK of the HockeyAllsvenskan. In this season, he became the Elitserien champion.
In the next season, Nygren played 1 game with the Färjestad BK under-20 team, 50 regular season games and 10 play-off games with the Färjestad BK of the Elitserien and 3 games on loan with the Bofors IK of the HockeyAllsvenskan.
In the 2012-13 season played Nygren only with Färjestad BK of the Elitserien. In this season, he won the Salming Trophy for the Elitserien's defenceman of the year as he was also the defenceman who scored most goals (13) in the Elitserien.
In 2013, Nygren moved to North America and played 16 games with the Hamilton Bulldogs of the AHL. After these, he was loaned to the Färjestad BK of the SHL (formerly Elitserien) where he finished the season with 25 regular season games and 15 play-off games played. In this season, he also played at the AHL All-Star Game.
In the 2014-15 season, Nygren continued with the Hamilton Bulldogs of the AHL.
In 2015 - 2017 captained Nygren the Färjestad BK of the SHL. In the 2016-17 season, he was the defenceman who scored most goals (11) in the SHL.
Since 2017 is Nygren playing with the HC Davos of the NL. In the 2017-18 season, he was selected into the NL Media All-Star Team and into the Spengler Cup All-Star Team and in the 2020-21 season, he was the defenceman who scored most goals (14) in the NL. He is currently signed with the HC Davos until the end of the 2023-24 season.
International career[]
Nygren played with the Swedish National Team at the 2014 and 2016 World Championships. At the 2014 tournament, he won the bronze medal.
