Magnus Hellberg (born on April 4, 1991 in Uppsala) is a Swedish professional ice hockey goaltender who is currently playing for SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL. Magnus was selected 38th overall by the Nashville Predators in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, and was the first goaltender selected in the draft.
Club career[]
Hellberg began his junior career with the Arlanda HC organisation. He made his senior debut in the 2008-09 season playing 2 games with the Wings HC Arlanda of the Division 1.
In 2009, Hellberg transfered to the Almtuna IS organisation. In this season, he played 22 games with the junior team of the Almtuna IS and one game on loan with the Vallentuna BK of the Division 1.
In the 2010-11 season, Hellberg played in 31 regular season games and 5 qualification games with the Almtuna IS of the HockeyAllsvenskan and 3 games on loan with the IFK Kumla.
In 2011, Hellberg moved to the Frölunda HC organisation and played there his last junior season. He played two games with the Frölunda HC junior team, 17 regular season games with the Frölunda HC of the Elitserien and one regular season game and 2 Kvalserien SHL games on loan with the Örebro HK of the HockeyAllsvenskan.
In 2012, Hellberg moved to North America to try his luck and become an NHL goalie. In the 2012-13 season, Hellberg played 39 regular season games plus 4 play-off games with the Milwaukee Admirals of the AHL and 2 games with the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL.
In the 2013-14 season, he played mostly with the Admirals, to be specific, 21 games, but he also played 7 games with the Cyclones and also made his NHL debut playing one game with the Nashville Predators of the NHL.
Hellberg played only for the Admirals during the 2014-15 season. After that, he moved to the New York Rangers organisation and spent the 2015-16 season with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL playing there 53 games in this season and also playing one game with the New York Rangers of the NHL.
In the 2016-17 season, Hellberg played 2 games with the Rangers and 36 games with the Wolf Pack.
In 2017, Hellberg moved back to Europe and signed with the Kunlun Red Star of the KHL. He spent there one season before moving to SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL where is he playing since 2018.
International career[]
Hellberg played as a member of the Swedish National Team at the 2018 Olympics and at the 2018 World Championship where the Sweden won the gold medal.
