The capital and largest city is Skopje. It borders Kosovo to the northwest, Serbia to the north, Bulgaria to the east, Greece to the south, and Albania to the west.
Macedonia was part of the former country of Yugoslavia until it gained its independence in 1991.

Macedonia joined the International Ice Hockey Federation in 2001, but the country has not debuted at World Championships. There are 3 Macedonian teams, Makoteks, HK Skopje, and Vardar Skopje. There is a small ice rink in Skopje. Steve Staios has Macedonian roots.
