History[]
Ice hockey has been played in the Gothenburg area since February 26, 1938, when Uddens IF was facing IF Fellows in a match at Krokslättsvallen. IF Fellows won 3-0.
During the 1940’s and 1950’s ice hockey in Mölndal was more popular than in GöteborgGothenburg, partly because there were two arenas of Kikås – the home arena for Sågdalens SK – and Krokslättsvallen who was home arena for IF Fellows. Gothenburg then only had Gamla Ullevi, which was not particularly well maintained in relation to the Mölndalsbanansbanan. In addition to these clubs, a third club named IK Rapid was formed that mostly came to focus on youth ice hockey. The three Mölndalsklubbarna merged in 1970 under the new name FSR Mölndal, where FSR was the beginning letters in the names of the three old clubs. Already the following year they changed their name to Mölndals IF and a few more years later the association was divided when the bandy merged with Fässbergs IF.
In anticipation of their own ice rink opening in 1974/1975 their matches in Scandinavium and the following season in the Frölundaborg ice stadium. The hall, Åby Isstadion, was completed in 1976. By 1983, the A-team had qualified for Division I. In the 1987/1988 season, the association became historic when the first Swedish hockey club enlisted a Russian player, Vladimir Lavrentjev. After the 1990/1991 season, the club's main sponsor withdrew and a clean-out of the economy became necessary. In 1991, the name was changed to Mölndal Hockey.
