The following players have been officially named as captains and alternate captains of their National Hockey League (NHL) teams.
Captains[]
Twenty-seven of the thirty-one NHL teams currently have a captain. The four teams without a captain are the Arizona Coyotes, New York Rangers, Ottawa Senators, and the Columbus Blue Jackets. The longest currently serving captain is Zdeno Chara of the Boston Bruins, who has held the role since 2006. On October 5, 2016, Connor McDavid was named captain of the Edmonton Oilers, making him the youngest captain in Oilers and NHL history. At 19 years and 266 days, McDavid beat Colorado Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog for the title of youngest captain in NHL history by 20 days.
