Len played hockey for the Quebec City Citadelles and football with the Ottawa Rough Riders when he was 18 years old. He was the youngest player in the Big Four Football League (known today as the Canadian Football League) at that time.

While playing hockey for the Citadelles in Quebec City, he roomed with goaltender Jacques Plante and was traded to the Victoriaville Tigres for NHL Hall of Fame Member Jean Beliveau.

He was a Golden Gloves-calibre boxer and star athlete at St. Pat's High School in Ottawa who joined the Riders while in grade 13 (Senior Form) in 1947 and played the next season before enrolling at McGill University in Montreal where he starred in both football and hockey for the Redmen.

Len Shaw is one of only three players to be named captain of both the McGill University football and hockey teams.
