The Komoka Kings are a Canadian junior ice hockey team based in Komoka, Ontario, Canada. They play in the Western division of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League. As of the start of the 2017-18 season the team is based out of the Middlesex Centre Wellness and Recreation Complex.
History[]
In 1968, the Jets joined the Border Cities Junior "B" league. Although not much is known about the league prior to '68, it is thought that the team originated in the "Bluewater Junior "C" Hockey League" by OHA historians. When the BCJCHL became the Great Lakes Junior C Hockey League in 1970, the Jets stayed on board. In 1972, the Jets moved up to Western Junior "B", but were sent back to Junior "C" in 1984. In 1989, the Jets came back to the Western "B".
The Petrolia Jets have petitioned the OHA for a permanent move to Forest, Ontario. [1] In late April, the governing body of the Western Ontario Conference of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League approved the move of the Petrolia Jets.[2] Their name was changed to the Lambton Shores Predators, to match the name of the local minor hockey system.[3]
On September 11, 2008, the Predators played their first game. The game was in Sarnia against the Sarnia Legionnaires. Sarnia won 8-5.
Departure from Forest[]
In May 2017 it was announced that the Lambton Shores Predators were planning on moving out of Forest to move to Komoka, Ontario for the 2017-18 season The move had already been approved by the league and the OHA. The move received the approval of the Middlesex Centre Wellness and Recreation Complex which was the final hurdle in the moved. Two junior C level teams (Mount Brydges Bulldogs and Lambeth Lancers) were also reportedly interested in moving to Komoka. The team cited an issue with being able to sign their own players and having to rely on receiving players from the London Nationals and many of those players choosing other towns over Forest. The team also citing losing many of those players back to London when they developed. The team announced they would be rebranded as the Komoka Kings for the 2017-18 season. The Strathroy Rockets and London Nationals opposed the relocation due to territorial issues as Komoka is about 15 minutes from Strathroy.
