The Knoxville Speed was a UHL team which played from 1999-2002 in Knoxville, Tennessee in the James White Civic Coliseum. They were formerly the Madison Monsters. Team owner of the Knoxville Speed and Madison Monsters was Andrew Wilhelm. Wife Michele Wilhelm assisted with team merchandising and ran the Speed Shop store. Brother Dan Wilhelm was President of the much rivaled Asheville Smoke and had previously helped run the Madison Monsters. Also, brother Mike Wilhelm was one of the equipment managers to the Speed. The Knoxville Speed and Asheville Smoke played each other roughly nineteen times a season plus the playoffs. Many die-hard fans, players and broadcasters remember the fierce bench-clearing brawl between the Knoxville Speed and Asheville Smoke in January 2000.
