Kivalliq Canucks

The Kivalliq Canucks are a Canadian junior ice hockey club based out of Rankin Inlet, Nunivut.

History[]

Formed in 2002, as Team Kivalliq, with two other Nunivut teams, Team Baffin from Iqaluit and Team Kitikmeot from Cambridge Bay. Before the 2006-07 season, the team would change their name to the Canucks, while Baffin and Kitikmeot could merge to become the Qikiqtani Elks (Qikiqtani Sharks as of 2011).

The Canucks are a regional team that plays off against Qikiqtani in the Nunivut Challenge Cup to be the Hockey North junior champions. The winner gains the right to represent the Territory in the Maritime-Hockey North Junior C Championships. In eleven years, the Canucks have only lost once (2009).

The Canucks have improved leaps and bounds over the past eleven seasons, for many years not even getting a win against competitors in the Prince Edward Island Junior C Hockey League, Nova Scotia Junior C Hockey League, and New Brunswick. Eventually the Canucks figured out how to inch their way into a semi-final spot and at the 2012 Maritime-Hockey North Junior C Championships they made their first trip to the final.
