Establishment[]

On June 16, 2023 the Superior International Junior Hockey League announced the addition of the Kenora Islanders to the league for the 2023-24 season. The team will be based out of the Moncrief Construction Sports Centre in Kenora. Due to possible ice availability issues with short notice (just over 3 months) on the forming of the team and construction being done at the arena the team may have to play some games out of the Bowman Electric Keewatin Memorial Arena as that is the other arena in the community.[1]

The name was chosen due to the large amount of islands and shoreline on the Lake of the Woods. The team is the first junior A team in the community since the Kenora Jr. Thistles last played in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League in 1982, and is the first team from Kenora to play in the SIJHL since the league's establishment in 2001. The team opted out of the choice of the historic Kenora Thistles name often associated with teams in the community, as it is the community's U18 AAA team name whom play in the Manitoba AAA U18 Hockey League.

The logo is base upon a map of the islands that make up the community within the Lake of the Woods and is a take off on the theme of the classic New York Islanders logo depicting Long Island and using the Islanders tradition blue, orange and white colours.

The team would suspend play on January 29, 2025 citing issues in dealing with the league executive board of governors and that the team was working on securing new ownership for the team.[2] The league stated that they would looking for ownership that would keep the team in Kenora.[3]
