John Milton Gould (born April 11, 1949 in Alliston, Ontario) is a former professional ice hockey left winger who played 504 NHL games for the Buffalo Sabres, Vancouver Canucks, and Atlanta Flames. He played professionally from 1971 to 1980. He is the older brother of two-game NHLer Larry Gould.
He played junior hockey for the London Nationals in 1967-68 and the renamed London Knights in 1968-69. Undrafted by any NHL team, Gould played for the Charlotte Checkers of the Eastern Hockey League in 1969-70 and 1970-71. His 48 goals and 52 assists for the Checkers in 1970-71 caught the attention of the Buffalo Sabres who signed him as a free agent in 1971.
Gould spent most of his time in the Sabres organization playing for the Cincinnati Swords of the American Hockey League, winning the Calder Cup in 1973.
Partway through the 1973-74 season Gould was traded to the Vancouver Canucks with Tracy Pratt for Jerry Korab. This immediately sparked Gould's career. He scored 9 goals and 10 assists for th Canucks in the last 45 games of the season. In 1974-75 he scored 34 goals and the next season potted 32.
The season after (1976-77) saw Gould traded to the Atlanta Flames as the Canucks started to rebuild. He vnever regained his top form although he did score 19 goals in 1977-78. The Edmonton Oilers chose him in the 1979 NHL Expansion Draft and immediately shipped him to Buffalo for Alex Tidey. Gould split the season between the Sabres and the Rochester Americans and then retired.
In the NHL Gould played 504 games and scored 131 goals and 138 assists.
