John David Barrett (born July 1, 1958 in Ottawa, Ontario) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player.
Career[]
A defenceman, Barrett was selected in the 1978 NHL Entry Draft by the Detroit Red Wings with whom he spent most of his NHL career. His older brother Fred was also an NHL defenceman. Both of their careers were cut short by injuries. Following repeated kneecap breaks, John retired after 488 NHL games, recording 20 goals, 77 assists, (97 points), and 604 penalty minutes.
He played Tier II junior with the Gloucester Rangers in 1975-76 and with the major junior Windsor Spitfires from 1976 to 1978. The Detroit Red Wings chose him 129th overall in the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft.
Barrett turned pro with the Milwaukee Admirals and the Kalamazoo Wings in 1978-79. After two-and-a-half seasons of minor pro, Barrett became a regular on the Red Wings in 1980-81. He played for them until March, 1986, when he was traded with Greg Smith to the Washington Capitals for Darren Veitch.
In January, 1987, he suffered the knee injury that would eventually end his career. He was traded to the Minnesota North Stars in February, 1988, but his career ended that year.
