James William "Sailor" Herberts (born October 31, 1897 in Cayuga, Ontario - died December 5, 1968) was a Canadian professional ice hockey centre who played six seasons in the National Hockey League for the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Cougars.

Herberts started out with the senior Hamilton Tigers of the Ontario Hockey Association in 1922-23 and with the Eveleth Rangers the following season.

He signed as a free agent with the brand-new Boston Bruins in 1924-25. Herberts played the next seven seasons in the NHL with the Bruins, Toronto St. Pats, and Detroit Cougars. In 206 games he scored 83 goals and 31 assists.

After 1930 he spent three seasons in the minor pros before retiring in 1933.

Trivia

  • He led the Bruins in goals, assists, points and penalty minutes in the 1924–25 Boston Bruins season. He's the only Bruin in team history to lead in all four categories in a season.
  • Herberts scored the first Hat trick in Bruins history during a 3-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on January 5, 1926.
