Jason McBain (born April 12 1974 in Kimberley, British Columbia) is a former ice hockey defenceman. McBain played over 700 games in the United States, Canada, and Europe and was the first captain of the Las Vegas Wranglers.
McBain played his junior hockey in the Western Hockey League with the Lethbridge Hurricanes and Portland Winter Hawks and was a fourth round draft pick for the Hartford Whalers in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft. McBain would play nine games for the Whalers over the 1995-96 and 1996-97 seasons.
McBain's juniors career started in 1990 when he signed with the Lethbridge Hurricanes and would play in 65 games, scoring ten points for Lethbridge before being traded to the Portland Winter Hawks during the 1991-92 WHL season. With Portland, McBain would score 142 points in 188 regular season games and 24 points in 32 post season games over three seasons. Portland would reach the WHL Championship series in 1993, eventually losing to the Swift Current Broncos in seven games.
McBain's professional career started in 1994 when Hartford assigned him to play for their American Hockey League affiliate, the Springfield Falcons. McBain would play three seasons with the Falcons racking up 122 points in 208 regular season games and 10 points in 24 post season games.
After the 1996-97 season, Hartford released McBain who would become a journeyman going from team to team, league to league including stints in Sweden and Germany. This culminated in 2003, when McBain (as well as his brother, Mike) would sign with the ECHL's expansion Las Vegas Wranglers. McBain had experience playing ice hockey in Las Vegas after playing 65 games with the Las Vegas Thunder during the 1998-99 IHL season and was named the franchise's first captain by head coach and GM Glen Gulutzan. McBain would play in 137 games and had set the franchise record for career points with 95, before it was broken by Dan Tudin in 2006. McBain is still tied for most assists in a single season, having notched 44 assists during the 2003-04 season. McBain retired from professional hockey after the 2004-05 ECHL season, leaving the captaincy to his brother Mike.
