Coaching career[]
After graduating from the University of Waterloo, Brooks went on to coach their hockey team, then returned home to coach the Listowel Cyclones Jr. "B" team. He joined the Guelph Storm in 2001–02 as a member of Jeff Jackson's coaching staff. In 2004–05, Brooks was named the assistant general manager of the Storm, then in 2007–08, he was promoted to associate coach. He guided Team Ontario to a gold medal as head coach of the team at the World Under 17 Hockey challenge.
In the summer of 2008, Storm head coach Dave Barr left the team to join the Colorado Avalanche as an assistant coach, and Guelph named Brooks as his replacement. In his first season as head coach of the Storm, Brooks led the team to a second place finish in the Midwest division, and sixth overall in the Western Conference. Guelph was then swept by the Saginaw Spirit in the conference quarter-finals.
In his second season with the Storm, Brooks led the Storm on a late season hot streak to lift the team to the playoffs, however, they were eliminated by the London Knights in five games in the conference quarter-finals.
