Jakub Zbořil (born on February 21, 1997 in Brno) is a Czech professional ice hockey defenceman currently playing on loan with the HC Kometa Brno of the Tipsport Extraliga while under a contract with the Boston Bruins of the NHL. He was selected by the Boston Bruins in the first round, 13th overall, in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.
His brother Adam also plays ice hockey.
Club career[]
Zbořil began his junior career with the HC Kometa Brno organisation. Zbořil was drafted by the Saint John Sea Dogs in the first round, fifth overall, of the 2014 CHL Import Draft.[1] His outstanding play with the Saint John Sea Dogs of the QMJHL during the 2014–15 season was recognized when he was named to the 2014–15 QMJHL All-Rookie Team.[2]
Leading up to the 2015 NHL Entry Draft on 26 June 2015, Zbořil was named as a top-rated prospect and was widely projected to be a first round selection at the draft.[3][4] He was ultimately selected by the Boston Bruins with the 13th overall pick, acquired from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for Milan Lucic, one of three consecutive first-round selections by the Boston Bruins, along with Jake DeBrusk (14th overall) and Zachary Senyshyn (15th overall). On July 15, 2015, Zbořil signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Boston Bruins.[5]
Zbořil continued with the Saint John Sea Dogs for the next two seasons and won the QMJHL in the 2016-17 season.
In the 2017-18 season, Zbořil played with the Providence Bruins of the AHL.
It would not be until the 2018–19 season, with a depleted defensive corps at the time, that Zbořil would play his first NHL game with the Boston Bruins. Zbořil's first game with the Bruins occurred on November 17, 2018, in a 1–0 overtime road loss to the Dallas Stars.[6] In that season, he played 2 games with the Boston Bruins and 56 regular season games and 4 play-off games with the Providence Bruins.
In the 2019-20 season, Zbořil played only with the Providence Bruins of the AHL.
At the beginning of the 2020-21 season was Zbořil loaned to the HC Kometa Brno of the Tipsport Extraliga until the North American season starts.
International career[]
Zbořil represented Czech Republic at the 2013 and 2014 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournaments winning the silver medal at the 2014 tournament, he also played at the 2014 and 2015 World U18 Championships winning the silver medal at the 2014 championship and then he played at the 2016 and 2017 World Junior Championships.
