Originally drafted in 1966 by the New York Rangers, Egers would also play for the St. Louis Blues and Washington Capitals. Egers is an original member of the Capitals, who claimed him in the 1974 NHL Expansion Draft, and holds the distinction of scoring the first winning goal for the team on October 17, 1974 against the Chicago Black Hawks.
Early in his career with the Rangers, he suffered a life-threatening injury that affected his play for some time. He was traded to the Blues in 1971 and enjoyed several good seasons in St. Louis.
Traded back to the Rangers in 1974, he was soon after picked by the Washington Capitals in the 1974 NHL Expansion Draft. Egers spent several injury-shorthened seasons with the Capitals and one with the senior Brantford Alexanders before retiring in 1977.
In 284 NHL games, Egers scored 64 goals and 69 assists.
