Jean-Claude Sawyer (born August 12, 1986 in Saint John, New Brunswick) is a professional ice hockey defenceman, currently with the Toledo Walleye of the ECHL.

Juniors career[]

Sawyer played five seasons in juniors, suiting up with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League from 2003 until 2007.

In his first two seasons, Sawyer played in 87 games, notching 8 goals and 15 assists for 23 points. Following the 2003-04 season, Sawyer was selected by the Minnesota Wild in the fifth round (161st overall) of the draft. Sawyer opted to return to the Eagles, increasing his numbers in each of the next three seasons. In his final season with Cape Breton, Sawyer would score 15 goals and 62 assists for 77 points and helped lead the Screaming Eagles to the semifinals of the President's Cup playoffs. Sawyer would net 3 goals with 16 assists for 19 points in the 16 games he played with Cape Breton during the playoffs.

Sawyer's play during the 2006-07 season earned him a 2nd team selection to the All-QMJHL team.

Professional career[]

Sawyer began his professional career in 2007 with the ECHL's Pensacola Ice Pilots. Sawyer would play in 65 games for Pensacola, scoring 7 goals and 25 assists for 32 points. During the 2007-08 season, Sawyer would also make four appearances for the American Hockey League's Rockford IceHogs.

Sawyer would bounce around the AHL and ECHL in his second professional season, playing for Rockford of the AHL(4 points in 19 games) and splitting time with both the Fresno Falcons (3 points in 6 games) and Gwinnett Gladiators (22 points in 31 games) of the ECHL.

Sawyer would join the Toledo Walleye for the 2009-10 season and proved to be a major impact for the first year team. Sawyer would have career highs netting 21 goals and 38 assists for 59 points in his first season with Toledo. Sawyer would be selected to the American Conference All-Star team as a starter and was named the team's captain. At the end of the season, Sawyer was selected 1st Team All-ECHL and was named the ECHL Defenseman of the Year.
