Iowa State University is located in Ames, Iowa. Its ice hockey team, the Cyclones play in the American Collegiate Hockey Association.

The school had a women's team that played in the Midwest Women's Alliance for the 1997-98 season.  This was the start of women's collegiate hockey in the mid-west.

The men's club hockey program dates back to the late 1960s. On January 28, 1977, it was reported that the ISU team was ranked #15 in NCAA Division II by the Minnesota publication Let’s Play Hockey. They were the only club team rated among the top 20 in the division, and were coming off a split with top-ranked Gustavus Adolphus.
