Gus Kyle

Walter Lawrence "Gus" Kyle (b. September 11, 1923 in Dysart, Saskatchewan - d. November 17, 1996) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman who played 203 games in the National Hockey League for the New York Rangers and Boston Bruins.

He played junior hockey with the Notre Dame Hounds from 1939 to 1941. Following the 1941-42 season when he played for the New York Rovers, Kyle returned to Canada to play senior hockey. He played for the Saint John Beavers from 1943 to 1947 and for the Regina Capitals from 1947 to 1949.

In 1949 Kyle signed as a free agent with the New York Rangers. He immediately won a regular job with the Rangers for two seasons. In 1951 Kyle was traded to the Boston Bruins with Pentti Lund for Paul Ronty. He played one season in Boston and led the NHL in penalty minutes with 127.

He played for the Calgary Stampeders from 1952 to 1956 when he retired.

Kyle coached the Stampeders from 1957 to 1961. He then coached the St. Louis Braves in 1962-63, their only year in the Eastern Professional Hockey League and 1963–64, their first year in the Central Professional Hockey League.

Following the close of his coaching career, Kyle spent some two decades on the St. Louis Blues radio broadcasting team.

In the NHL, Kyle played in 203 games and scored 6 goals and 20 assists.
