The Greensboro Monarchs played in the ECHL from 1989-1995. When some of the owners voted to enter the American Hockey League, the franchise was cancelled by the ECHL. The Carolina Monarchs played in the AHL for the 1995-1996 season before their lease was revoked by the Greensboro Coliseum when the Hartford Whalers (NHL) moved temporarily to Greensboro and became the Carolina Hurricanes of the NHL. The Hurricanes have since settled into their new arena in their permanent home of Raleigh, North Carolina.
The Monarchs won the Riley Cup in their first year. They also made it to the finals in 1991 & 1995.
