Watters played one year of semi-pro hockey with the San Francisco Shamrocks prior to abandoning a professional hockey career for one in the medical field graduating Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Psychology from the University of Minnesota . He then attended medical school at the University of Manitoba and completed his internship at Winnipeg General Hospital. He focused his career on pediatric neurology and being an educator. He spent his early medical career in Winnipeg and then Boston before settling in Montreal working at Montreal Children's Hospital and becoming a professor at McGill University.
